A friend of mine is running a one shot in the old World of Darkness Werewolf system. I can't remember the last time I was a player, so definitely psyched for a nice change of pace. Here's what I put together:
Sees-the-Unseen is a metis born outside of Garou society. When his homid mother Nora realized she was pregnant, she fled from her tribe without telling her lupus lover so as to preserve his honor.
Nora fled the pack and has been in hiding ever since. She lived under the assumed name of Pierce in the suburbs. At the end of winter, Nora gave birth to Desmond Pierce (aka Sees-the-Unseen), born a Philodox under a waxing moon.
His First Change occurred at the age of 4 when one morning Nora went to wake her little crinos pup and found a young human boy in his bed. She was so relieved that Desmond would be able to blend in as a human, and relentlessly helped him practice his ability to shift. Desmond, having been born blind, was never aware of why he had to spend his life hiding or that there was anything abnormal about him. On that fateful day when his coat, snout, and tail disappeared he was terrified. It was then that his mother told him that he finally looked like everybody else. She said it was normal to look the way he did now, and that he must never show anyone else another form.
Through the next several years Desmond lived life as any other normal kid (albeit a blind one). His other senses compensated and for the most part Desmond never quite thought of himself as disabled. During his early teenage years, some bullies started accusing him of being able to see, since Desmond never needed a walking stick. When other adults weren't around, they would try beat him up. However, Desmond was always able to smell or hear when they were coming and he was never caught. Until one fateful day in his senior year of high school. It was on a class trip to a wildlife conservation, that Desmond found himself again the object of pursuit by some mean spirited jocks. It wasn't long before he tripped on an exposed root and his pursuers were on top of him. During the resulting being Des passed out.
When he awoke, it was night. His clothes were shredded and he was covered in blood. Desmond had an oddly full sensation in his stomach, and the sent of blood and guts was everywhere. He started running and ran across a search and rescue team looking for the missing youths. In the end, the case went unsolved. The police theorized that after Desmond passed out from the beating, rabid wolves must have come across them. They other boys must have run and the wolves chased them all down. The report states that the wolves were obviously too full to eat the unconscious Desmond.
The following year at college, Desmond could swear he was routinely being followed. As he went to class, hung out with friends, and went about his daily life sometimes he could feel a familiar presence nearby that he just couldn't quite place. It was a feeling deep in his gut that this person was someone like him. A werewolf.
One evening after studying at a coffee shop, Desmond took a short cut back to his dorm through an alley way he knew well, hoping the presence would follow him. It did. Desmond called out, "I know you're there, and I know you're like me." The man who stepped out of the shadows revealed himself to be Desmond's father.
The lupus Garou known as Finds-the-Path told Desmond that he had searched for him for years. He told him about his heritage, his clan, and his shame. Finds-the-Path broke a sacred law in loving Desmond's mother, and blames himself for Desmond's blindness.
As time went on Desmond secretly met with his father, learning how to be Garou - how to hunt, how to speak Garou, and their history. When Desmond finished college, his father told him it was time to meet his kin. Desmond knew this meant being subject to ridicule for his birth, and that his father would most certainly be exiled. He refused to go. Finds-the-Path told him about the war, that he would be robbing his son of a piece of his soul if he was never initiated as a Garou. Worse, he would be vulnerable to many threats in dangerous world without the protection of a pack. While Finds-the-Path never regretted loving Nora, nor was there anything more important to him in this life than his son, he had still broken sacred law. Facing the consequences for that would protect Desmond, and do right by his people. Desmond gave his mother a tearful goodbye (she pulled every guilt trip in the book to keep him from going) and set off with his father to join his people at the Sept of the Glass Hand in Bryson City, NC.
It was a sad day when it was revealed to the Uktena that Finds-the-Path not only had broken sacred law, but hidden his cub from the Garou for over twenty years. He was summarily sentenced to exile. Before he left Finds-the-Path made his closest friend, Seeker-of-Ways, promise to be there for Desmond while he could not. As Desmond said his final goodbyes, his father gave him an Uktena Scale saying it will help him in the days to come.
While Desmond has spent the past few months scrubbing floors and doing other degrading duties for the Caern, Seeker-of-Ways has been filling in the holes of Desmond's knowledge. It was not long before he determined Desmond's skill not only with his ordinary keen senses, but his sixth sense. The cub was extremely sensitive to the Umbra, Magic, and identifying a creature's true nature. It was because of these gifts that upon his initiation, Desmond's was given the Garou name Sees-the-Unseen.
Despite some of the ill treatment he's received, Sees-the-Unseen finds everything about his new world fascinating. As a student he was always insatiably curious. In a world of spirits, monsters, and magic, Desmond's only yet begun to whet his appetite for knowledge of the unknown.
